Underbites Can Cause Dental Problems Fishkill NY Image

Underbites can cause problems for children, reports News4Jax.com. An underbite occurs when the teeth align incorrectly and the lower teeth are in front of the upper teeth. The condition can be fixed by surgery in extreme cases, or braces in milder cases. Around 3% of the U.S. population has an underbite, which is much less common than an overbite.

Dr. Jimmy Bennet, a pediatric dentist, said the underbite can stem from a variety of causes. "If you can't breathe through your nose you have to position your mouth in a different way, so you're basically throwing your jaw forward and creating that deviation. Then there's genetics and you can't really run away from mother nature," he said to News4Jax.com.

Periodontal Disease in Fishkill: Are You Safe?

Posted by Dentist in Fishkill on 09/10/12

Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gingivitis and gum disease, is what happens when growth of bacteria is left on your teeth for a prolonged amount of time. Bacteria combine with saliva and form a clear, sticky residue that lingers along the gum line. This is why periodontal disease in Fishkill can be such a problem for many residents. Bacteria and saliva are part of every mouth. So what exactly are the circumstances that cause this infection? Here we will learn more about the many causes and factors of periodontal disease.

Even a healthy mouth is home to many types of bacteria. Only 5 percent of these species are directly linked to periodontal infections. The healthy, helpful bacteria are called gram positive aerobic bacteria. The harmful bacteria are referred to as gram negative anaerobic bacteria. When the harmful bacteria combine with mucus and saliva it can produce toxic residues that will cause infection of the gums. This early stage of gum disease is often called gingivitis. Some symptoms may include redness, swelling, and even some bleeding, but most patients will not even know they have a problem at this stage.
